Net Zero Forum “Zeroes In” on Carbon Reduction, Energy Saving

Despite intermittent downpours, 30 or more interested Bedford residents turned out for the Net Zero Advisory Council’s public forum on June 20  to consider ways to reduce carbon emissions in town buildings, both in the immediate future and looking out to the year 2050. The Council will incorporate input from this forum and other feedback into a set of proposed strategies to present to the Selectmen in September.

Lights Up on the Great Road and New Housing Around Town

Emerson Dental and Verizon Wireless, two businesses incoming at 168 and 170 Great Road, appeared in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals on June 13 seeking a special permit for illuminated signs. Both companies described their proposed signs as architecturally pleasing, explaining that they fit in with the numerous neighboring businesses with illuminated signs. Both were granted special permits per Article 39.5 Section 1 of the Sign Bylaw, allowing them to put up the signs, with Verizon also calling upon Article 34.5 (A)(1) of the Sign Bylaw, permitting their signage to be split into two different signs, with one in the front and rear of the building.

Net Zero Advisory Council Public Forum ~ Thursday, June 20 at 7 PM

The Net Zero Advisory Council will host a public forum on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 7 PM in the Reed Multipurpose Room at Bedford Town Hall. All are welcome. 

The forum will consider and discuss the Council’s proposal for achieving net-zero building carbon emissions within the next three decades. The recommendations were developed by a diverse group of stakeholders from the commercial, residential and municipal sectors. The Council looks forward to sharing its recommendations with the public and obtaining feedback on the proposed initiatives.

Planning Board Moves the Ball Forward with Draft ADU Bylaw

The Bedford Planning Board discussed a revised draft of proposed zoning bylaw amendments at their June 11 meeting, further evaluating the standards by which accessory dwelling units would be regulated.

The main bylaw change under consideration allows accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to be built within a house lot, further expanding options for homeowners. The draft, as reviewed on Tuesday, reflected what the Board interpreted from the public hearing weeks earlier, as well as their own suggestions. The end goal is to move forward a fairly practical bylaw from both viewpoints.
