Favorites Old and New – Fall Concert by Kammerwerke Double Wind Quintet
November 24, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm$10 – $20
The Kammerwerke Double Wind Quintet will present Favorites Old and New – Fall as the first installment of our theme for the 2019-20 season. The concerts will feature some previously performed “favorites” and some new discoveries, including new works written for the ensemble.
Old Wine in New Bottles is a folk song, folk dance inspired work by Gordon Jacob. Humorous, clever and inventive, it is entirely melodious, rhythmically radiant, and harmonically tonal. Despite the addition of contrabassoon, its sound is light, bright, lively, brassy and rich with fun and frolic. In Divertimento No. 1, Alan Pearlmutter captures the essence of the romantic spirit. This two-movement miniature features lyrical melodies which sometimes meander into surprising harmonic regions. Dutch composer-conductor Matthijs Kruik’s Inquietus is tonal, humorous, entertaining, and spirited, with simple folk dance-like melodies. Alec Wilder successfully connected the worlds of serious and popular music. Serenade for Winds blends tonal and semi-tonal short classical chamber music movements. The music is gentle, quiet, and transparent, humorous, and lyrical. Voices for Ten Winds by Nicholas Sims-Williams is a slow, romantic work which evolves from a rocking motif and builds to a rich tapestry of full harmonies. An English horn is featured.
The concert will take place Sunday, 24 November 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at First Parish in Bedford Unitarian Universalist, 75 The Great Road, Bedford, MA (handicapped accessible). Tickets at the door: Adults $20; Students $10; 13 and under free. For more visit website www.kammerwerke.org and watch us on YouTube.
