Lowell Chamber Orchestra to Perform at MCC’s “World of Music”
April 3 @ 7:30 pmFree
Amid the pandemic, Middlesex Community College is able to stream live recordings of performances throughout the Spring 2021 semester. Middlesex will continue its online spring concert series “A World of Music” with a performance by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra, which will air online at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3.
Now in their second season, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Orlando Cela, MCC Assistant Professor of Music. They will perform “Miniature Universes,” which includes music written for a small ensemble. While the sounds are like that of a full symphony orchestra, the music portrays a vast range of human emotions.
The performance will feature performances of “Dance Preludes” (third version) by Witold Lutoslawski; “Sinfonietta, Op. 1” by Benjamin Britten; and “Nonet, Op. 31” by Louis Spohr.
A semi-finalist in the Professional Orchestral Performance Division of the American Prize, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra released a new album entitled “The Suite,” which is receiving international praise.
“The album features suites by Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach, and examines the gallant style’s history and sets the groundwork for modern interpretations,” said Cela. “The Baroque vanguards pass the torch on to two contemporary composers – Anthony R. Green and Jose Elizondo – who shape and mold the style to match their own compositional artistry as they paint musical pictures of civil rights activism, heart-warming moments in the sun, and the passing of time.”
The Spring 2021 concert series debuted with MCC faculty members performing Celebrating Black Composters from Europe, Africa, Unites States and South America and continued with a performance by the Rasa String Quartet. There are two more online performances that will take place this semester. An MCC Student Recital will air at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, while the Lowell Chamber Orchestra will air another performance at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, called “On the Double.”
