Reading the Declaration of Independence & Flag Retirement Ceremony
July 4 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
July 4, 2019 – Thursday
Thomas Jefferson’s judicious declaration 243 years ago launched a new nation, a new Republic whose birth is celebrated on July 4th.
11:00A Veterans Memorial Park
This year, we again honor tradition with the reading of The Declaration of Independence at 11:00A at Veterans Memorial Park. Many years ago, John Filios, a modern day Bedford Minuteman, began this tradition. How apropos to read the document aloud to the citizenry while adjacent to the statue of Bedford Minuteman, Nathaniel Page. Private Page is depicted carrying the Bedford Flag into battle on April 19, 1775 in a bigger than life size bronze statue; how fitting.
12:00P The American Legion
After the reading the Declaration of Independence, there will be a Flag Retirement Ceremony starting at noon. This respectful ceremony will be held in the rear parking lot of The American Legion and VFW at 357 Great Road.
This event has typically been held on Flag Day (June 14th) each year. However, when Flag Day falls on a weekend (Fri, Sat & Sun) we will honor our retired flags on the 4th of July.
Various groups gather together assisting the collection of flags, as well as the ceremony itself. Special thanks go out to: Bedford Fire and Police Departments, the DPW, Scouting Troops and Pack, Daughters of the American Revolution, Knights of Columbus St Michael’s Parish (KoC), St Paul’s Church, The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), The American Legion, Moison Ace Hardware, the Bedford Barber Shop, and the Bedford Patriotic Holiday Committee.
Join us for a Patriotic July 4th !
