Bedford Rotary Club ~ Breakfast with Santa
December 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Rotary Club Invites Families to Join Santa for Breakfast in Bedford on Sunday, December 6
During “Breakfast with Santa” on Sunday, December 8, from 9 am to Noon, Santa will briefly reside in the temporary village created by the Rotary Club of Bedford at Bedford High School. The jolly man in the red suit has once again accepted Rotary’s invitation to make an early visit and spread holiday cheer to children and adults alike. This year will be Rotary’s 33rd Breakfast with Santa, the Club’s major annual fundraiser.
Festively transformed for this community tradition, the high school cafeteria will see hundreds of townsfolk from Bedford and its surrounds come to enjoy a morning of fun craft activities, balloon animals, raffle items, a visit and photo with Santa, and hearty breakfast that has become a tradition in itself.
Three decades plus ago, when the menu was created, eggs, sausages, and coffee were the highlighted items. Undoubtedly there was added fare when Rotarians served the first breakfast in loaned space at the American Legion Hall. The eggs were donated by Chip-In Farm. Rotarian Bob Cassidy remembers well how he and Milan Jackson had to crack all the eggs by hand. Today’s menu is similar, with pancakes joining the scrambled eggs and sausages, along with cereal, bagels, milk, orange and apple juice, water, hot chocolate, and of course, coffee.
Rotarian Ralph Hammond’s first “Breakfast” experience was at the American Legion Hall in 1990 when his job was to do all the dishwashing. But what stands out in both his and Bob Cassidy’s memories is the huge storm that hit on the day of Breakfast with Santa a couple years later. Electric power went out everywhere in town except for one place, the American Legion Hall. “Boy, did we sell sausages, eggs, and coffee that morning,” says Bob.
After it outgrew the American Legion Hall, “Breakfast” memories were made at both Davis and Lane schools. Then the growing event transitioned to its present, larger home at the High School. Now, as then, every year, new memories abound…just as long as children and parents get to Breakfast with Santa to make them.
