Organizations

Bedford’s first Town Seal

For a town of its size, Bedford offers a variety of community organizations, and no matter your interest it’s likely at least one would prove interesting.

Bedford’s longest-running volunteer organization is the Bedford Santa program; it boasts more than 55 years of making magic for families on Christmas Eve.

And there are organizations devoted to the arts – the Bedford Arts and Crafts Society, the Bedford Center for the Arts Photo Group, and Bedford Television; to history – the Bedford Historical Society, the Bedford Minuteman Company, the Friends of Bedford Depot Park, and the Friends of the Job Lane House, to the environment – the Bedford Conservation Land Stewards, the Bedford Garden Club, and the Bedford Global Warming Action Coalition – aka Transition Town Bedford, and Mothers Out Front, along with ‘Green Teams’ at several Bedford churches.

The Friends of the Bedford Free Public Library, the Friends of the Council on Aging, the Citizens Scholarship Foundation; and the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary offer both opportunities for socializing, and for supporting well-loved institutions.

Business, political and fraternal organizations are alive in Bedford as well: Bedford Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Bedford, the Bedford League of Women Voters, both Democratic and Republican Town Committees, the American Legion Post 221, and the Frank W. Thompson Masonic Lodge.

Each of Bedford’s school populations has a parent groupBedford Elementary Schools Together/BEST PTO, serving Davis and Lane schools; the Middle School Parents’ Association for John Glenn Middle School; the High School Parents’ Association for BHS families; an association of METCO families; and SEPAC, the Special Education Parents Advisory Council. And for Bedford’s youngest (birth through pre-school) and their parents, there’s the Bedford Family Connection.

Organizations for kids include the Bedford 4-H/Future Farmers at Chip-in Farm; an active Destination Imagination program; and Scouting for both girls and boys – Troop 194 and Troop 114. There are also multiple private pre-schools operating in Bedford: Bedford Children’s Center; Bedford LEAP School; Bedford Montessori Pre-school; and Open Arms Christian Preschool.

In addition to the delights offered by Bedford’s extensive and well-maintained trails system and the Minuteman Bikeway, sports activities abound for all ages through the Bedford Recreation Department’s programs, the Bedford Athletic Association; Bedford Babe Ruth Baseball & Softball; the Edge Sports Center; and Wedgewood Swim and Tennis Club.
