Ninth Annual Tenacity Challenge Grapples with Racism, Reparations, and the 2020 Elections

For the first time since its inception, the L&A2 Tenacity Challenge, could not be held in person. Undeterred, however, by the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bedford High School virtually hosted its annual academic scholarship competition for Latino and African-American high school students from urban and suburban districts across Massachusetts.

Even with the limitations resulting from a mid-semester shift to on-line learning, teams from Framingham, Lowell, Methuen and Newton North, in their determination to compete in the ninth annual challenge collaborated and prepared remotely to present arguments and analyses on this year’s theme – Racism, Reparations and the 2020 Elections.

Celebrating Bedford’s Teachers During National Teacher Appreciation Week

It would have been impossible to predict how National Teacher Appreciation Week 2020 could be more different than those in years past. Classroom rituals are all new on Zoom calls, everyone is at home and social distancing in place.

Bedford’s educators held an in-service about distance learning on Friday, March 13, and set about conjuring class plans and learning how to use Zoom. Now, more than two months in, online learning is in place from the earliest grades through AP classes at BHS.

Some Good News: BHS Senior Jordan Vinh Appears in SGN ~ John Krasinski’s YouTube Show

Whatever we have given up in the pandemic (and that’s A LOT) there is an abundance of creativity and imagination on the other side of the ledger that can lift us up, reassure us, and make us smile or even laugh on days when “upbeat” may seem a notion from a distant past.

When Gov. Baker officially closed public schools for the remainder of the year, Jordan Vinh felt the pain along with his classmates and decided to use his recently inaugurated podcast as a means of reaching out to them.  His “Dear Class of 2020” podcast was excerpted by John Krasinski for a special graduation episode of his YouTube show, Some Good News (SGN).  SGN began with a Tweet from Krasinski asking followers to send him stories that “made you feel good this week or made you smile”.  Thousands responded.  A collage of heartwarming and funny original videos make up the bulk of the show with Krasinski as emcee.  Episode 6 is earmarked for 2020 graduates of every age and is both light-hearted and inspiring
